Sphalerite: Mineral information, data and localities.

Sphalerite Group. Sphalerite, also known as blende or zinc blende, is the major ore of zinc. When pure (with little or no iron) it forms clear crystals with colours ranging from pale yellow (known as Cleiophane) to orange and red shades (known as Ruby Blende), but as iron content increases it forms dark, opaque metallic crystals (known as Marmatite).

Zinc also reacts with other substances: halogens, oxygen, chalcogens, alkalis, acids, ammonium and ammonia salts, and also with weaker metals. Zinc does not react with nitrogen, and is an amorphic metal. In reactions with alkalis, the element forms complex compounds – hydroxo-zincates.

Extraction of Zinc - QS Study

Extraction of Zinc . Zinc blende is concentrated by floath floatation process. The pulverized ore is kept in large tank containing water and pine oil. The mixture is agitated by passing compressed air. Ore forms froth and comes to the surface while impurities are left in water.

Metals - Qld Science Teachers

Metals Properties of Metals. Metals are elements that have atoms arranged in rows. The electrons are easily released from metal atoms so that layers of metal atoms exist in a 'sea' of electrons. Examples of Metals are gold, copper, lead, zinc, iron, magnesium, sodium, calcium and mercury.

The Properties and Uses of Zinc Metal

Zinc (Zn) is an abundant metal, found in the Earth's crust, with a myriad of industrial and biological uses. At room temperature, zinc is brittle and blue-white in color, but it can be polished to a bright finish.

Smithsonite: The mineral smithsonite information and pictures

Calamine was the original name of the mineral Hemimorphite, and described this zinc ore in globular and botryoidal forms. The mineral Smithsonite, which closely resembles Hemimorphite and is also a zinc ore, was also called Calamine by the miners and early collectors. Today use of this term has been discouraged because of its confusion of ...

Metal Profile: Iron Properties and Characteristics

Nov 12, 2019· Iron was likely originally discovered and extracted as a result of wood burning on top of iron-containing ores. The carbon within the wood would have reacted with the oxygen in the ore, leaving behind a soft, malleable iron metal Iron smelting and the use of iron to make tools and weapons began in Mesopotamia (present-day Iraq) between 2700 and 3000 BCE.
